Student Teaching
This book came in handy as a student teacher and when applying for teaching jobs. I appreciated the strategies on how to jump-start my student teaching on a positive note by creating relationships with my students and CT. Even though I have now completed my student teaching, I will continue to use many of the book’s classroom management and discipline tips in my own classroom, such as the question & answer box and bellnote activity. I recommend this to any student teacher.

This is a supplementary book to Discipline with Dignity.
English / Language Arts
I love it because it puts everything together. Seems more practical rather than some idealistic book. I can use his ideas in a class. I found his section about having controversial novels the most helpful.

General Interest
ASCD SmartBrief brings you the K-12 education news that really matters. ASCD editors handpick key articles from hundreds of publications, do a brief summary of each and provide links back to the original sources. Most importantly, it’s free!
As a new teacher I recommend purchasing Harry Wong’s 1st Days of School. It gives a ton of great information and educates you on the most current trends in classroom management. This will give you something to talk about in the interview as well.

“The Tough Kid Book” and “The Tough Kid Toolbox” are invaluable tools for me as a high school teacher at a high needs school in New Orleans. These books are designed to be used with all grade levels and for both special and general education teachers alike. Both books contain strategies for working with non-compliant children. The books are published by Sopris West and can be found on the company website.

With all the stress that teachers face everyday, this is a great read. It reminds us the importance of relaxing and teaches simple ways to alleviate the stress. It’s a little hokey in parts, but overall it’s a good book.
